MISHAWAKA, Ind. — The Carroll Men's Soccer team took a second half lead on the road Monday night, but a red card and a barrage of late goals turned the match, as the Fighting Saints fell 3-1 to No. 12 Bethel (Ind.) at Morey Field.
Looking to wrap up the non-conference slate with a big win, the Fighting Saints (1-2-1) managed to break a 0-0 deadlock in the 60th minute. Felix Billard (Mallorco, Spain / SR) scored his first goal of the season, giving the Saints an unassisted 1-0 lead.
The No. 12-ranked Pilots (3-1-2) answered Billard's breakthrough just seven minutes later, however, as Stephen Nana Tuffour leveled the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute with a perfectly placed chip shot from just outside the box.
The match swung firmly in Bethel's favor shortly after, as Billard was shown a red card in the 73rd minute, leaving Carroll to play down a man for the final 17 minutes.
Bethel capitalized almost immediately, with Lucas Pigatto scoring off an assist from Noe Ferreira less than a minute later to put the Pilots ahead 2-1.
Goalkeeper Noah Jordan (Deer Park, Wash. / JR) denied a penalty kick in the 74th minute to keep Carroll within a goal, but Bethel added an insurance goal in the 84th minute when Ferreira converted off a feed from Miguel Gallegos to make it 3-1.
Jordan was tested throughout the night, finishing with seven saves as Bethel held a commanding 21-4 edge in shots and an 11-2 advantage on goal.
Carroll will now have a full week to prepare for conference play, as they host (RV) Rocky in their CCC opener on September 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Nelson Stadium.
