BERKELEY, Calif. – The Carroll College men's basketball team fell to 14th-ranked Cal 93-58 Monday evening in an exhibition game at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley. The outcome isn't a surprise but for head coach
Carson Cunningham the game was about more than just basketball.
Â
"This was a great opportunity for Fighting Saints Hoops to wave the Carroll College banner at one of the world's elite research institutions," Cunningham said. "I'm grateful to Coach (Cuonzo) Martin for hosting us. It was awesome to see some 70 Carroll supporters in the stands cheering us on."
Â
The Saints did give the Bears an early scare, opening up a 7-3 lead before Cal rattled off 20-straight to take a commanding lead in the game. The biggest bright spot came from
Oliver Carr, the returning Fronteir Conference Freshman of the Year shined on the big stage, scoring a game-high 21 points and a team-high five rebounds.
Â
"We had some bright moments in the game but ultimately they were just too much on the boards," Cunningham said. "They had some stretches during which they shot really well. They're ranked 14th for a reason and they showed it."
Â
The Bears outrebounded Carroll 45-23 and earned 10 more shot attempts on the game 64-54.
Â
Carroll was strong from the free-throw line, hitting 16-of-18 and both teams took care of the ball, with only 13 turnovers a piece.
Â
"I hope Carroll supporters enjoyed seeing our school, with its five straight Top College in the West  US News and World Report rankings, going up against such a fine university, athletically and academically," Cunningham said.
Â
The Saints continue their exhibition schedule with a game against Montana on Nov. 21, in Missoula.
