Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Carroll Women Bounce Back With Win at Bellevue

BELLEVUE, Neb. - The (RV) Carroll Women's Basketball team bounced back from a loss in their last contest, picking up a hard-fought 63-56 win over Bellevue on Friday evening at the BU Fieldhouse.

The Fighting Saints (16-7, 14-3) came into Friday's game against the Bruins looking to begin a new win streak and remain in position to contend for the Frontier crown, and did just that with a seven-point win in their first trip to Nebraska.

The Saints started hot in the first quarter hot, knocking down each of their first three attempts of the game. A mid-quarter lull, paired with an uncharacteristic four Carroll turnovers allowed the Bruins to sneak back into the fray. The Saints would go on to finish the frame with a 15-12 lead, thanks to a 58 percent effort from the floor (7-12).

By the midway point of the second quarter, the Bruins charged in front with a 24-17 lead. The Carroll shooting advantage fell off in a big way, as the Saints went ice cold to begin the frame. Albrecht pulled Carroll back even at 24-24 with a tough and-one finish at three minute mark and proceeded to take over. The All-Frontier performer knocked down five straight free throws to bring her first half scoring total to 15 and give Carroll a two-score lead. For the second straight game, a buzzer-beating three at the end of the half would burn the Saints, as Bellevue trimmed the Carroll lead to just one, 33-32.

Although both teams shot a dead-even 12-26 from the field, the first half points from each team came in two very different forms. Albrecht and Kenzie Allen (Grantsville, Utah / JR) contributed the bulk of the first half scoring for the Saints, combining for 27 of the 33 points. (Albrecht 15, Allen 12). On the other side of the court, Bellevue's attack was much more balanced, with four different players recording four or more points, led by Drasoni Kyles' impressive opening 20 minutes, going 5-7 from the field, including 2-2 from range, for 13 points.

A slow start to the third quarter flipped in a big way near the midway point of the frame. An Allen steal turned into a knock-down three from Ava Oakland (Boise, Idaho / SR) to kick-start a  15-0 Carroll run, leading to a 50-42 lead heading into the fourth.

Bellevue refused to go away quietly, shooting 55 percent in the final frame to keep things close, but Carroll would force four more turnovers and come away with timely buckets to close out the seven-point road win.

Albrecht and Allen were outstanding in the victory, each finishing the night with 20 points to become the first Carroll tandem to score 20 or more in a game since last February (2.1.25 at RMC - Albrecht 29, Keller 21).

Allen made her impact felt on the defensive end as well, recording a career-high eight steals - the second-most single game steals by an individual in program history (11 - Cathy Wallace twice).

The win sets up a monumental matchup tomorrow night in Madison, S.D. as Carroll will look to take the season series with No. 7 Dakota State and regain the top spot in the Frontier standings at 5 p.m. (MST).
