MOOREHEAD, Minn. - It was smooth sailing for the Carroll Men's Basketball team on Friday night, as they raced past Valley City State for a 22-point win in a neutral site Frontier matchup at Memorial Auditorium on the camps of Concordia College.
The Fighting Saints (19-7, 17-4) left no doubt on Friday, jumping all over the Vikings right from the opening tip in their coast to coast win to take the season series.
Head Coach Dan Pearson urged his team to bring their own energy to Friday's neutral site matchup, and the Saints responded. Carroll never trailed in the lopsided victory, building an 18-point lead over the game's first 10 minutes. Defense turned to offense, as the Saints held the Vikings to just 20 percent from the floor during the extended run.Â
Isaiah Crane (Portland, Ore. / R-SO) was terrific in the opening 20 minutes, leading all players with a 21-point first half effort to help the Saints build a 24-point lead by the break. The Saints doubled-up the Vikings' first half effort, leading 48-24 with contributions throughout the lineup.
Crane gave way in the second half for another Carroll guard, as
Drew Jones (Puyallup, Wash. / FR) began to take control as the game wore on. Jones helped extend the Carroll advantage to as large as 26 in the second half, as the Saints remained in complete control.Â
A late Viking push would briefly trim the lead to as little as 15 points with two-and-a-half minutes left, but the Saints steadied themselves down the stretch to win with ease.
Crane led all players with 23 points on the evening, also matching
Isaac Round (Northampton, England / SO) with a team-high four assists. Jones ended his big night with 20 points, five rebounds, and a season-high four steals.
Kellen Harrison (Bozeman, Mont. / SO)Â was one of four Saints to finish with three or more steals, matchingÂ
Lorence Dela Cruz's (Winnipeg, Manitoba / SR) three steal effort. Harrison added 15 points, while Dela Cruz finished his night with 12 to round out the Saints' top scorers.
The Saints will look to cap the season with a win in the finale tomorrow evening, as they head to Mayville State for a 6 p.m. tilt and their chance at another season sweep.
