MAYVILLE, N.D. - The Carroll College Men's Basketball saw a four-game win streak come to a close on Saturday evening, as they dropped their regular season finale, 93-79, to Mayville State at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
The Fighting Saints (19-8, 17-5) let one get away from them on Saturday night, coming out flat and failing to recover as they settled for a season split with the Comets.
The Comets started hot, beginning the night on a 7-1 run over the first two minutes, while the Saints struggled to find any sort of rhythm on offense. By the midway point of the first half, an
Isaac Round (Northampton, England / SO) three-pointer would finally bring Carroll back to level, knotting things up at 19-19, but it would be all Mayville for the rest of the night.
Mayville State exploded for a 30-13 run spanning six-plus minutes of game time, and the Saints would never fully recover. Christian Bowen-Webb and Malik Siggers combined for 31 points in the first half for the Comets, as they would go on to lead 50-38 at the break.
Coming out of the half, Carroll did their best to chip away at the deficit, but couldn't find a way to string together stops on the defensive end. Five separate times the Saints would shrink the Comet lead to single digits at nine points, but for every mini-run they went on, Mayville State had a response.
A team built to win the turnover battle, the Saints failed to do so on Saturday. Carroll finished with 12 team turnovers to just five for the Comets, and shot just 48 percent from the floor to Mayville's 60 percent.
Drew Jones (Puyallup, Wash. / FR) finished a good scoring weekend with a 17-point performance that also included four rebounds and three assists.
Dean Blair (Great Falls, Mont. / FR) was one of the lone bright spots for the Saints in the loss, providing energy and physicality in the second half en route to 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds off the bench.
Isaiah Crane (Portland, Ore. / R-SO) added 14 points and a team-high six assists, while Round and
Kellen Harrison (Bozeman, Mont. / SO) each kicked-in 11 points of their own in the loss.
The Saints finish the regular season tied with Bellevue for second place in the Frontier Conference standings, and will enter next week's tournament as the three-seed.
