HELENA, Mont. - A tightly-contested first half broke way in favor of the Carroll Men's Basketball team on Friday night, as they overpowered Providence in the second half en route to a 92-78 win at the PE Center.
The Fighting Saints (17-7, 15-4) kept pace with the rest of the Frontier Conference leaders on Friday, utilizing a 53-point second half to secure the season sweep over the Argos.
The early stages of Friday night's battle in Helena belonged to the Saints, as they grabbed a six-point lead at the first media timeout thanks to early triples from
Kellen Harrison (Bozeman, Mont. / SO),
Isaac Round (Northampton, England / SO), and
Drew Jones (Puyallup, Wash. / FR). However, they couldn't find a way to pull away from the Argos.
Providence matched nearly every Carroll bucket for the next 11 minutes, never taking the lead, but remaining within one to two scores throughout. The Saints briefly enjoyed an eight point lead, but Providence closed the half on a 9-4 run to trim the Carroll advantage to three at the break, 39-36.
Isaiah Crane (Portland, Ore. / R-SO), who was recognized pre-game for becoming the 40th member of the Carroll 1,000-point club, led Carroll with 12 first half points, while Jones added in seven more as the Saints went 8-17 from range.Â
Providence dominated the glass in the opening 20 to remain within striking distance, coming down with 26 rebounds to Carroll's 15, including nine offensive boards in the frame - all directly leading to second chance points.
As has been the case for the majority of the season, the Saints owned the opening minutes of the second half. Five quick points from Harrison near the 18-minute mark capped a 7-2 start for Carroll, giving them their first double-digit lead of the game.
Again, the Argos responded. By the 12-minute mark, Providence had once again trimmed the Carroll lead to just one, but that was all the closer they would get.
Carroll went on a 28-8 run, spanning seven minutes of game time to blow the game wide open. Timely three-pointers from Harrison, Jones, and
Lorence Dela Cruz (Winnipeg, Manitoba / SR), paired with strong defense and good free throw shooting helped spur the run and secure the 14-point win to take the season series.
The Saints once again had five different players record 10 or more points in the win.
Harrison finished his night with a game-high 18 points, while adding in three boards, a pair of steals, and a team-high five assists. Crane added 15 points, five boards, and four assists.
Nate Christy (Spokane, Wash. / FR) finished with 13 points and six rebounds, while Round and Jones each chipped in another 12 to round out the double-digit scorers.
Carroll will now turn their attention towards a revenge game against MSU-Northern tomorrow night at 7 p.m., looking to even the season series following a loss to the Lights in Havre last month.
