CALDWELL, Idaho - The Carroll Women's Soccer team put 11 shots on goal and got a standout performance from goalkeeper
Maria Ackerman, but fell 1-0 to No. 4-ranked College of Idaho on Friday evening at Simplot Stadium.
The Fighting Saints (2-3-6, 1-1-4) finished with the edge in shots on goal, 11-9, and spread the attack around. Ten different Saints took a shot, with nine of them putting at least one on target.
A goal 35 seconds into the second half by Alondra Osuna was the difference, however, as the No. 4 Yotes found a way to hold on for the 1-0 win.
All-Conference keeper Maria Ackerman (Billings, Mont. / SR) kept Carroll in it for all 90 minutes. She made eight saves, including six in the first half, to hold the match scoreless until the break. Ackerman turned away a pair of shots in the 32nd minute just seven seconds apart to keep things scoreless, then added two more saves after the break against a potent C of I attack.
The Saints closed the first half with a rush. Delaney Moczan (Las Vegas, Nev. / R-JR) sent in a corner kick in the 44th minute, and Carroll followed with three shots in the final minute from Rachel McAllister (Brier, Wash. / JR), Carmen Anderson (Missoula, Mont. / JR) and Adison Stoddard (McCall, Idaho / JR), but the Saints couldn't find a way to put one away.
After Osuna's goal, the Saints kept pushing. They put up nine shots in the second half, and kept up the pressure late. Four Carroll shots came in a 76th minute scramble, but again the Saints would come up empty-handed. Moczan and Anderson added late chances in the 80th minute, but C of I held on for the tight win.
Moczan led Carroll with four shots, while McAllister had three shots, two on goal, and Anderson had a pair on target.
The Saints will look to bounce back from their first CCC loss of the season, turning around quickly for a 5 p.m. match at Eastern Oregon tomorrow night in La Grande.
