Saints Drop Weekend Series to No. 1 Southern Oregon

HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Softball team was shutout in a pair of losses to No. 1-ranked Southern Oregon on Saturday afternoon, losing games 2-0 and 11-0 as the Raiders swept the weekend series at Nelson Stadium.

The Fighting Saints (5-11, 2-4) struggled at the plate on Saturday, never finding a way to string together hits in a pair of scoreless losses to the NAIA's top-ranked team, the Raiders (21-1, 6-0).

GAME ONE: SOU 2, CC 0
Kennedy Venner (Billings, Mont. / JR) pitched seven innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits, but didn't get any help at the plate as Ayla Davies picked up her 13th-win of the season in a pitcher's duel to wrap up the CCC conference portion of this weekend's series.

Venner hit Ari Williams in the first at-bat of the second inning, then two batters later Sammie Pemberton would give SOU the early advantage with an RBI triple to the right field fence.

The game's only other run came in the fifth inning, after the Raiders loaded the bases with a series of singles and walks. Faith Moultrie hit an RBI single into left field, scoring one to give SOU some breathing room at 2-0. The lead would prove plenty, and SOU would close out the win allowing only one hit over the final two frames.

Carroll put just one runner beyond second base, tallying only five hits in the loss. Brookelynn Jackson (Keizer, Ore. / SO) was the lone Saint to record multiple hits, going 2-3 in the game.

Southern Oregon's Sarah Kerling also went 2-3, scoring one of the two runs for the Raiders.

GAME TWO: SOU 11, CC 0 (Five Innings)
With the conference sweep already in-hand, the Raiders upped the intensity at the plate in the final game of the series.

A Faith Moultrie RBI single opened the scoring in the first inning for SOU. Vanessa Lang drove in two more on a single to right field in the second inning, and SOU had a quick 3-0 lead.

The Raiders added three more runs in the third, as Piper Love drove in one run with an RBI single, and Kierstin Grotwiel's single into center field crossing two more to double the lead at 6-0.

An error led to one more run in the fourth frame, before the Raiders broke the game wide open in the fifth. SOU tacked on four more runs in the top half of the fifth, cruising to a run-rule 11-0 win in the non-conference matchup.

Carlee Smith (Blackfoot, Idaho / SO) was the lone bright spot in the Carroll lineup, going 2-2 to account for half of the Saints' four total hits in the shortened loss.

Kennedy Kila struck out two, facing little pressure en route to her second win of the season for the Raiders.

The Saints will look to wipe the weekend away and start fresh as they travel to Eugene, Ore. next week for a four-game series at Bushnell.
