Gainesville, Fla. – Saints Track & Field scored a National Champion on Day 1 at the US Marines NAIA Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Weston Means placed first in the High Jump, setting personal and school records twice over the course of the event and clearing over 7 feet for the first time. The win earned Means his second All-American honor of his career as he moved up from an 8th place finish at the Outdoor Championships last spring.
"Weston is just a great competitor and stayed calm all the way through today," said Head Coach Harry Clark. "It was really fun to watch and he has big goals for the future," he added.
Carson Krack and Tucker Monaco competed in the Heptathlon, ending Day 1 in 8th and 13th. Both athletes will aim for a strong Day 2 as they will finish up the event with the 60m Hurdles, Pole Vault, and 1000m on Friday. Monaco came from behind in the Decathlon at the Outdoor Championships last spring to earn All-American status, so he is familiar with the challenge.
Zack Gacnik executed a strong strategic race in the 5000m. He placed 4th in Heat 1 to earn an Automatic Qualification to the final on Saturday, and he ran near his personal best despite the early laps moving at a slow pace.
Brynn Wandle cleared her first height ever at a National Meet in the Pole Vault. The Men's Distance Medley Relay gained valuable experience for the future, but the group did not make it to the final. Brycen Gardner ran a personal record in the Mile during the anchor leg.
Competition continues at Alachua County Sports & Events Center on Friday February 28 and March 1. Madalen Shipman will be the final Saint to begin action with her semi-final on Friday.
The Saints' event schedule is as follows (times adjusted to Mountain Time from Eastern):
FRIDAY
8:00 am Heptathlon (Monaco, Krack)
11:45 am 600m Semi (Shipman)
SATURDAY
11:25 am 600m Final (Shipman)
