DICKINSON, N.D. — The Carroll College Volleyball team dropped a four-set match (12-25, 25-21, 17-25, 18-25) to Dickinson State on Saturday afternoon at Scott Gymnasium, bringing their five-game win-streak to a close.
The No. 24-ranked Fighting Saints (12-7, 7-4) couldn't find a way to close out their first lap around the Frontier slate with a win, falling in four against the Blue Hawks (9-7, 5-6), who now have three wins in conference play over ranked opponents.
In the opening set, Carroll was limited to just six kills , finishing with eight errors for a -.050 hitting percentage, while DSU hit .265 with 11 kills. The Blue Hawks ran away with the opener going 10-3 over the final 13 points of a 25-12 set win.
Carroll answered in the second. The Saints opened the set with an ace from Jansyn Carrizales (Sunnyside, Wash. / JR) and an early kill by Lauren Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / JR) to lead 2-0. After several ties, the Saints used a stretch of points that included back-to-back kills from McKaila Balcom (Pasco, Wash. / JR) to build an 11-7 advantage. DSU came within two, but Carroll pulled away with a late 5-0 run to close out the 25-21 win to even the match at 1-1.
Little went Carroll's way the rest of the match, as the Carroll attack continued to struggle to materialize, as the fourth set was the only frame in which Carroll hit over .100 on the day (.157).
Dickinson State won the final two sets of the match 25-17 and 25-18.
Balcom led Carroll with 11 kills, while Birdie Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / FR) added seven kills and two blocks. Elizabeth Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / R-SR) posted six kills, eight digs, and four blocks.
Carrizales tallied15 assists to go with 12 digs and three aces. Lauren Fox (Bozeman, Mont. / FR) added 11 assists, nine digs, and an ace, while Sofia Kimmel (Bozeman, Mont. / SO) led all Saints with 19 digs.
Carroll will have nearly a full week to prepare for next Friday's road test at MSU-Northern from the Armory Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
