(RV) Saints Fall in Four at Western

DILLON, Mont. — The Carroll College Volleyball team dropped a four set match against Montana Western on Friday night at the Straugh Gymnasium.

The Fighting Saints battled back from an early 1-0 hole, but couldn't find a way to overcome the Bulldogs in a Friday night showdown - as Western evened the season series at 1-1.

The Saints jumped to a 4–0 start in the opening set with a kill, an ace, and a pair of Western errors. Carroll kept the momentum early and held a 9–5 lead after two kills from Sidney Gulick (Kalispell, Mont.) but Western used a mid-set run to take control and closed the frame, 25–19.

Carroll answered in the second. After back-and-forth early points, the Saints tied the set at 4–4 on an ace from Luci Horne (Townsend, Mont. / R-FR), then used kills from multiple attackers to help build a 20–17 advantage. With the set tied late, Carroll finished with a four-point run that included a pair of blocks to win the set 25–23 and even the match.

Western controlled the third set, taking an early lead and maintaining it throughout on the way to a 25–16 win.

The fourth set was tight throughout. Carroll tied the set at 21–21 and later pulled within 24–23 on a kill from Lauren Heuiser, but Western converted the final point to take the set 25–23 and the match 3–1.

Elizabeth Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / R-SR) - returning to the court after being sidelined with illness for the past several weeks, led the Saints with 11 kills and 6 blocks, Lauren Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / JR) added 10 kills, and the youngest,  Birdie Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / FR) totaled 9 kills.

Sofia Kimmel (Bozeman, Mont. / FR) posted 19 digs, and Jansyn Carrizales (Sunnyside, Wash. / JR)  finished with 25 assists.

The Saints will finish their quick road trip with a 2 p.m. matchup in Butte against Montana Tech tomorrow afternoon.
