MAYVILLE, N.D. - The (RV) Carroll Volleyball team played their third consecutive five set match of the week on Saturday, but this one would fall in favor of Mayville State at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse.
Luck ran dry for the Fighting Saints (15-11, 10-8), as they saw a two set advantage slip out of their grasp against the Comets (6-17, 3-14).
The Saints started strong, taking the opening set 25-21 behind multiple kills from Taysa Conger (Merino, Colo. / SR), who tallied 17 on the day, and a balanced attack that included points from
Sidney Gulick (Kalispell, Mont. / SR)Â and Rachael Stacey (Helena, Mont. / SR). Carroll carried that momentum into the second set, pulling out a tight 27-25 win with key kills from Birdie Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / FR)Â late in the frame.
Mayville State responded by winning the next two sets decisively, 25-18, 25-18, and proceeded to finish things off with a strong middle portion of the fifth frame, edging the Saints 15-12 to complete the reverse sweep.
Conger led Carroll with 17 kills and two blocks, while Birdie Heuiser added 13 kills and a pair of blocks as well. Jansyn Carrizales (Sunnyside, Wash. / JR) recorded 28 assists, while defensively Molly O'Connor (Bozeman, Mont. / SR) had 25 digs and Sofia Kimmel (Bozmean, Mont. / FR) chipped in 28.
The Saints will remain on the road this week, with a pair of critical matches against Montana Tech and Montana Western.
