HELENA, Mont. - For nearly 80 minutes, Friday night's tilt on Valley Bank Field at Nelson Stadium appeared headed towards a scoreless draw, but a late spark gave Carroll a 1-0 win over Warner Pacific to remain firmly in the hunt for a CCC Postseason berth.
The Fighting Saints (5-4-4, 3-4-2) have clawed and scratched their way back into the tournament picture, fueled by solid defense and timely goals. Friday evening's shutout win was no different, as Carroll moved into a tie for eighth in the CCC table.
Maria Ackerman (Billings, Mont. / JR) had little to do in her clean sheet victory thanks to a tremendous effort from the Carroll back line.
Avery Lambourne (Billings, Mont. / JR), an All-CCC defender, pulled double duty for the Saints on Friday, netting the game's only goal with time ticking down. The junior managed to put away a rebound off of a free kick in the 80th minute, scoring the first game-winner of her career.
Lambourne and the rest of the Saints did well to limit the Knights all evening, holding Warner Pacific without a shot for the entire 90 minutes.
The Saints were decidedly more aggressive in the win, as Carroll put 18 total shots up in the match, 10 of which were on goal.
Up next, a Senior day showdown with Walla Walla on Sunday at 12 p.m.
