LEWISTON, Idaho - The Carroll College Volleyball team wrapped up play at the Hells Canyon Grand Invitational on Friday evening, sweeping Walla Walla before outlasting host-school Lewis-Clark State to cap an undefeated weekend.
The Fighting Saints (6-1) had a highly successful trip to Idaho this week, finishing the Hells Canyon Grand Invitational unblemished following a three-set sweep of the Walla Walla Wolves and a five-set marathon win over the LC State Warriors.
GAME ONE
Carroll's afternoon matchup was a dominant performance for the Purple and Gold. The Saints worked quickly, winning in straight sets (25-15, 25-15, 25-17), to match their win total from a season ago.
As a team Carroll hit .297 on the attack, while the Wolves hit just .028 in the match. More impressive than the attack percentage was the dominance at the point of attack. Carroll finished the match with an impressive 12 blocks.
Elizabeth Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / R-JR) led the Saints with 14 kills eight blocks in the game. Her younger sister Lauren (Helena, Mont. / SO) added eight kills of her own, while
McKaila Balcom (Pasco, Wash. / SO) kicked in seven blocks.
Hannah Schweikert (Columbia Falls, Mont. / R-JR) led all players with 28 assists in the win.
GAME TWO
A showdown with tournament hosts Lewis-Clark State in the night cap would prove to be the match of the tournament, as the teams battled in a five-set fight.
The Saints would strike first with a 25-20 set win in the first, before the Warriors evened the match up with a 28-26 win in set two. The third set, a 25-15 win for the Saints, would be the largest margin of victory for either team. LC State won the fourth frame 25-20 to force a deciding fifth set where Carroll ran away with a 15-7 win to end their weekend without a loss.
Both Heuiser sisters again had terrific outings in the second game of the day. Liz Heuiser posted a team-high 20 kills and three blocks, while Lauren was right on her heels with 15 kills and a pair of blocks of her own.
The Warriors' Juliauna Forgach Aguilar led all players with a 26-kill performance.
Schweikert was even more impressive in the second game of the day, finishing the match with a game-high 60 assists, the top mark in her career.
Julia Carr (Portland, Ore. / GR) finished with 32 digs, while Schweikert added in 22 of her own.
Four Saints were named to the All-Tournament team;
Elizabeth Heuiser,
Lauren Heuiser,
Hannah Schweikert, and MVP
Julia Carr.
Another out-of-state event awaits the Saints next week, as they head to Arizona for the OUAZ Invitational.
