VICTORIA, Texas - The Carroll College Golf Teams each battled on day one of the Frontier/Red River Conference Championship on Monday, but both find themselves at the bottom of the leaderboard looking up.

With heat indexes touching triple digits accounting for humidity, Monday morning's opening round was less than stellar for many of the Montanans in the field. Temperatures were already in the 80's for the 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, and the combination of heat, layout, and Victoria Country Club's Bermuda turf made for a tricky first day.

The Men ended round one play in eighth place, finishing with a team total of 338 (+50). They sit 20 strokes back of Montana Tech (+30), and 12 ahead of Providence (+62). Rocky had the rounds of the day for Montana schools, shooting (+6) as a team, but all four trail the host school, Houston-Victoria (-2).

JT Slivinski (Montpelier, Idaho / FR) fired the round of the day for the Saints. The southpaw shot 77 (+5) that included a birdie on the par five first hole. Jackson Hammond (Scottsdale, Ariz. / FR) found trouble on the par four tenth hole, but finished with a 12-over round of 84. TJ Fierling (North Bend, Wash. / FR) was three shots back at 87, while Michael Wall (Johnstown, Colo. / FR) rounded out the Carroll four with a 90.

The Carroll Women also find themselves with their work cut out for them over the next two rounds. The Saints sit in fifth with a team score of 364 (+76). Rocky leads all teams on the Women's side, shooting a combined 319 (+31).

A birdie on No. 18 helped Stella Claridge (Kalispell, Mont. / SO) pace the Saints with an opening round 88 (+16). Katie Fagg (Missoula, Mont. / SR) rolled in a sliding birdie putt on No. 11 from around 15 feet, finishing her round one stroke behind Claridge at 89 (+17). Celi Chapman (Montana City, Mont. / FR) shot 92 (+20), while Kate Williams rounded out the Carroll four with a 95 (+23).

Both teams will return to the course in the morning for a 7:30 a.m. (MDT) shotgun start and the second of three rounds.
