GREAT FALLS, Mont. - Both the Carroll Men's and Women's Basketball teams will compete for their respective Frontier Conference Tournament Championships this evening at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls. The Men will start the night with a 5 p.m. tip-off, with the Women's game following at 7:30 p.m.
March is here in all its glory, and only one school in the Frontier Conference has two teams playing for the tournament crown; Carroll College.
The Carroll Men will square off with No. 8 Montana Tech for the fourth time this season, after each team skirted into the title game with last second one-point wins in the semifinals.
Tech had a back-and-forth battle with the four-seed Montana Western yesterday, ultimately finding their game-winning basket on a tip-in after a series of offensive rebounds and misses with just seconds remaining.
Carroll on the other hand, made a ferocious comeback over the final three minutes in their semifinal with three-seed Providence. The Saints erased a 14-point deficit over the final three minutes, capped with what will go down as one of the biggest shots in program history.
James Lang (Portland, Ore. / R-SO) etched his name in Carroll lore with a 40-foot game-winner as time expired to send the Saints into the title match.
The pair of teams are clearly the best in the league, with each finishing well clear of the other four teams in the standings. The Orediggers have won the first three games in the series, but the Saints have a new energy following last night's heroics, and know that the Frontier auto-bid to the NAIA Tournament is their one and only priority.
The Carroll Women have rolled through the Frontier slate for the second consecutive season. The No. 6-ranked Saints overpowered Rocky on their way to another title game, where they will meet the only Frontier team to have beaten them this season, No. 14 Providence.
The Saints have not forgotten about their lone conference loss back in January, and will look to close the book on a historic season with a repeat of their 2022-23 title tonight.
Nearly a year ago to the day, Carroll beat a ranked Montana Western team on the Four Seasons Arena floor to raise the trophy. A trio of seniors (
Erica Nessan,
Maddie Geritz,
Jamie Pickens) who have done nothing but won in their time at Carroll aim to add one more championship to their already storied legacies.
Carroll could become the first team in the current Frontier format to have both teams win the Frontier Tournament championships should each team take care of business this evening.
