HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll Men's Basketball team went coast-to-coast in a home win over Montana Western, 83-73, on Saturday afternoon at the Carroll College PE Center.
The Fighting Saints (15-9, 9-2) started their final lap around the Frontier Conference regular season cycle with an impressive 83-73 win over the Bulldogs (12-12, 5-6).
While never truly dominating the game, the Saints held control from nearly the opening tip through the final buzzer to lock up at worst the second seed in the upcoming Frontier Conference tournament.
By the midway point of the opening half, Carroll had built a 10-point lead with production coming from all throughout the lineup. Starters and reserves alike played well in the first 10 minutes. The lead would grow to 11 points with just one minute remaining in the half, but a 7-0 barrage from the Bulldogs would whittle the Carroll lead to just four points at the halftime break.
Andrew Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif. / JR) was on fire in the first half, scoring 15 points and pulling down five boards to help put Carroll in front.
A resilient Western team continued to chip away at the Carroll lead once the second half was underway. By the eight minute mark, the Bulldogs eventually broke through and found their first lead, a one-point advantage, for the first time since the early minutes of the game.
Over the next five minutes, however, Carroll would once again rebuild their lead to double-digits. Western would not go out quietly, narrowing the lead to six with one minute remaining, but a series of free throws by the Moore's (Kendall and Isaiah) would put the game on ice, and Carroll would walk away with the 10-point win.
Cook, the Frontier's leading scorer, finished with a game-high 24 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
Kendall Moore (Dayton, Ohio / JR) scored 14 points, while
Isaiah Moore (Fairfield, Calif. / SO) scored 12 off of the bench.
Gui Pedra (Sao Paulo, Brazil / SR) had a good night as well, scoring 11 while pulling down four rebounds.
Jaylyn Stepney was the top threat for the Bulldogs, scoring 17 in the loss.
Carroll will host Providence at the PE Center on Thursday night as they look to finish the series sweep over their neighbors from Great Falls.
