HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll Men's Soccer put the finishing touches on a historic season on Sunday afternoon at Nelson Stadium, earning a 2-0 shutout over Providence before celebrating the first Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship in the 10-year history of the program.
The Fighting Saints (12-2-3, 11-1-1) put an emphatic end to the single-best season in program history, picking up shutout No. 11 on the season with a 2-0 win over the Argos (2-14, 1-12).
By nature of a Northwest (Wash.) win over Southern Oregon on Friday, the Saints had already secured the 2024 CCC Men's Soccer Championship before this afternoon's match had even started. However, that was not the Carroll mindset entering the final game of the season, as the team played as if their season depended on it.
Ten Carroll Seniors took to the pitch for the final scheduled home game in their careers, and all ten made the start on Sunday.
Providence came out as the aggressors, playing in the Carroll half for the majority of the first half, but the Saints would find the first score of the day.
In the 40th minute
Adam Webster (Las Vegas, Nev. / JR) played a ball into the box where
Sam Loughton (Hull, England / SO) was waiting to head it across to big
Justus Herrmann (Weil Am Rhein, Germany / FR). Herrmann beat the Argo keeper to give Carroll a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Less than a minute removed from halftime,
Alfie Snow (Middlesbrough, England / JR) matched
Felix Billard (Mallorca, Spain / SO) for the team-lead in goals on the year, burying his 11th of the year off of another Loughton assist to provide the Saints with an insurance goal they wouldn't need.
Juan Muniz Navarrete (Hermiston, Ore. / SR) came up with a clutch second-half save on a free kick from just outside the box, securing yet another clean sheet as Carroll rolled to a 2-0 shutout win.
With the regular season title, the Saints have received one of the conference's two automatic qualifying positions for the upcoming NAIA Men's Soccer Championship later this month.
Carroll will look to back up their historic season with their first CCC Tournament Championship, where they'll enter with the top seed. The CCC Champs will play the No. 8-seeded Multnomah Lions on November 10 at 1 p.m.Â
