HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Volleyball team dropped a five-set match to MSU-Northern on Saturday afternoon at the PE Center in Helena.
The Fighting Saints (17-12, 5-10) came out of the gates strong, but watched a two-set advantage slip away to a persistent Skylight (12-15, 4-11) effort.
Carroll got off to a hot start in the first set, cruising to a 25-18 win in the frame thanks to a -.024 Skylight attack.
The Saints followed it up with another impressive performance in set two, hitting a game-high .267 in a 25-19 win.
Everything was rolling along until the midway point of the third, as MSU-Northern started to heat up. Leading 21-17, Carroll would see the sweep slip away as the Skylights would battle back to win 25-23.
A Carroll comeback effort in the fourth frame would come up short, as Northern won a back-and-forth fourth frame in extras, 26-24, forcing a deciding fifth set.
In the fifth, the Skylights had all the momentum on their side, running away with a 15-10 set win to close out the match 3-2 and spoil the regular season finale for the Saints.
Rachael Stacey (Helena, Mont. / R-JR) led the Saints with 14 kills on the afternoon, while
Hannah Schweikert (Columbia Falls, Mont. / R-JR) tallied a game-high 47 kills.
Julia Carr (Portland, Ore. / GR) impressed one last time at the PE Center, leading all players with 39 digs and three aces.
MSU-Northern's Alana Graves was outstanding at the net, securing 8.0 blocks and 14 kills to lead the Skylights.
The Saints will get a chance for revenge in their next game, as the two teams will meet in the opening round of the Frontier Conference Volleyball tournament in Havre next week.
