HAVRE, Mont. - The Carroll College Volleyball team fell in four sets to host-school MSU-Northern in an opening round match at the 2024 Frontier Conference Tournament on Friday.
The Fighting Saints (17-13) had one of their better offensive performances of the 2024 season, but couldn't quite get over the hump against the Skylights (13-15) at the Armory.
Picking up right where they left off a week ago, the two teams went into extra points in the opening set. Carroll hit .208 in the frame, but the Skylights would find a way to outlast the Saints 27-25 following an impressive .310 attack of their own to take a one-set lead.
Carroll battled back in the second frame, racing out to a large lead before ultimately closing out the set victory 25-19.
Both sides struggled on the attack in the third set, with Carroll hitting just .022 and Northern just .114, but again the host-school would find a way to close out the set. Northern won the third 25-21 to take a 2-1 advantage into the fourth.
A .325 attack in the fourth would not be enough to propel the Saints to a win, as the Skylights took the set, and match, behind a game-high .370 hitting percentage.
Avery Kelly (Butte, Mont. / SR) led the Saints offensively, finishing her day with 14 kills followed by
McKaila Balcom (Pasco, Wash. / SO) with 11.
The Saints missed former All-American
Elizabeth Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / R-JR) who was sidelined with an injury sustained in practice earlier this week.
Hannah Schweikert (Columbia Falls, Mont. / R-JR) led all players with 40 assists, while
Julia Carr posted 21 digs in what could potentially be the last game in her record-setting career.
Alana Graves had an outstanding match to lead the Skylights, finishing with game-highs in both Kills (19) and blocks (5.0).
