DILLON, Mont. - The (RV) Carroll College Volleyball team fell in straight sets on Thursday night to the NAIA's No. 19-ranked team, Montana Western, at the Straugh Gymnasium in Dillon.
The Fighting Saints (12-5, 2-4) couldn't quite get things going in what played out as a reverse of last month's sweep against the Bulldogs (11-5, 3-3).
A poor-hitting night for the Saints spelled trouble in the three set sweep. Carroll finished the match with a .000 attack percentage ( -.122, -.027, .122), while Western was much more effective at .177 as a team.
The Saints held an advantage in the back half of the opening frame at 17-14, but a Bulldog rally in the late-stages would steal the game's first set, 25-20.
Another nine attack errors in the second set would lead to the Saints again falling by a score of 25-20 in the second set.
Western raced out to a 4-0 lead in the third and final set, before piecing together seven-straight points in the middle of the frame to run away with the evening sweep, 25-19.
Across the board, the Saints had a down night statistically. The lone bright spot in the box score would be the Saints' effectiveness with the serve, tallying five aces to Western's one.
Lauren Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / SO) led the Saints with eight kills and three blocks, while
Hannah Schweikert (Columbia Falls, Mont. / R-JR) and
Julia Carr (Portland, Ore. / GR) put up 17 assists and digs, respectively, both team-highs.
Western's Jazi Smith led all players with a game-high 16 kills, while Kaylee Fritz totaled a game-high 25 assists.
Now sitting two-games below .500 for the first time this season, Carroll will look to rebound in a big-time road test at No. 13 Providence on Saturday.
