BUTTE, Mont. - The Carroll College Volleyball team fell to Montana Tech in a five-set thriller on Saturday night at the HPER Complex in Butte.\
The Fighting Saints (15-8, 3-6) came up just short in their road effort tonight, falling in five sets to the No. 19-ranked Orediggers.
The Saints came out and won the opening frame 25-23 but struggled to maintain momentum as the Orediggers rallied back.
Carroll dropped the second and third sets 22-25 and 21-25, respectively, before bouncing back to claim the fourth set 25-21. However, Montana Tech sealed the victory with a 15-7 win in the decisive fifth set.
Taysa Conger (Merino, Colo. / JR) led the Saints attack, finishing her night with 13 kills, Lauren Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / SO)while contributed 12 kills in the loss.
Setter Hannah Schweikert (Columbia Falls, Mont. / R-JR) orchestrated the attack with 45 assists and also chipped in 7 digs.
Julia Carr anchored the defense with a match-high 40 digs, adding to her NAIA-leading digs per set mark of 7.02.
Montana Tech's Rhys Layton finished with a game-high 56 assists on the night in addition to six aces.
Carroll's effort at the net, featuring 11 total team blocks, were highlighted by Lauren Heuiser's six total blocks.
Up next, the third-and-final regular season matchup with Montana Western awaits the Saints next Thursday at the PE Center in Helena.
