ASHLAND, Ore. - The Carroll College Men's Soccer team picked up a big-time 3-1 win over No. 24 Southern Oregon to reclaim the top spot in the CCC Standings on Friday afternoon at Raider Stadium.
The Fighting Saints (8-2-3, 7-1-1) bounced back from a disappointing pair of performances last weekend with a convincing 3-1 win over the Raiders (10-3-1, 7-1-1).
Carroll got a quick start in the highest-profile game of the CCC slate this season. 2023 All-CCC Midfielder
Michal Mojzis (Bratislava, Slovakia / SR) scored his second goal of the season, just seven minutes into the match to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead.
The first half played out nearly exactly how the Saints had planned until a 41st minute goal by the Raiders evened the match at 1-1. Tristan Skeritt scored his second goal of the year off of an assist from Evan Norconk to send the game into the half tied.
Goalkeeper Juan Muniz Navarette (Hermiston, Ore. / JR) was outstanding in the first stanza, tallying three saves. In total, an aggressive SOU side fired 11 shots in the half, out-shooting the Saints by nine.
In the 58th minute,Â
Alan Gutierrez (Reno, Nev. / FR) attempted a cross from the right side of the pitch. His ball deflected off of an SOU defender and found the net to break the stalemate for the Saints, 2-1.
With just nine minutes remaining,
Caleb Hoxie (Helena, Mont. / GR) buried a shot from distance to put an exclamation point on one of the most significant wins in program history, 3-1.
The Saints now match SOU's 7-1-1 mark in CCC play, but own a hard-earned tiebreaker, setting themselves in the driver's seat for the top seed in the upcoming CCC Championship.
Tomorrow, the Saints will look to keep things rolling against a 4-3-2 Oregon Tech side in Klamath Falls.
