HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll Men's Basketball team picked up their fourth-consecutive Frontier Conference win on Saturday, defeating Providence 89-81 at the Carroll College PE Center.
The Fighting Saints (12-8, 6-1) overcame a late push from a pesky Argo team (10-10, 3-4) to maintain their positioning at the top of the conference table.
Saints fans had plenty to cheer about early. A quick
Josiah Cuaresma (Missoula, Mont. / FR) three pointer, followed by a rim-rocking
Gui Pedra (Sao Paulo, Brazil / SR) fast break dunk gave Carroll a very early 5-0 lead.
By the 13 minute mark, back-to-back
Kendall Moore (Dayton, Ohio / JR) buckets stretched the Carroll lead to 13 points. A pair of reserves,
Derek Kramer (Bellevue, Wash. / SO) and
Shaheed Muhammad (Arden Hills, Minn. / JR) provided valuable minutes and production, and Carroll would bring a 51-39 lead into the break.
During halftime, officials reviewed a goaltending call on an
Isaiah Moore (Fairfield, Calif. / SO) shot, and removed two Carroll points off of the board, making things 49-39.
By the first media timeout of the second half, Providence had narrowed the Carroll lead to just four points.
Andrew Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif. / JR), the Frontier's leading scorer, who had been held relatively in check until that point, began to take over.Â
Cook, the pair of Moore's (Kendall and Isaiah), and Kramer helped rebuild the Carroll advantage. Both Kendall and
Isaiah Moore would knock down clutch shots in big moments for the Saints, and Kramer had arguably his best showing of the 2023-24 season. Cook went on to score 11 of the final 15 points for the Saints, killing the Argo comeback attempt, converting free throw-after-free throw down the stretch.
All said and done, Cook led all scorers with 27 points and eight rebounds, his second-straight 27 point performance.
Kendall Moore turned in an impressive 19-point performance, going 3-5 from three.
Isaiah Moore added 11 points and six rebounds, while Kramer scored 12 and pulled down six boards of his own to round out the Carroll double-digit scorers.
Four Argos finished with double-digit point totals, led by Freddy Brown III's 15 point, six rebound night.
Up next for the Saints a battle for solo first-place in the Frontier standings with No. 8 Montana Tech in Butte next Thursday.
