HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Women's Soccer team battled the elements, but emerged victorious in a 2-0 win over Warner Pacific (Ore.) on Friday evening in Helena.
The Fighting Saints (6-0-1, 3-0) kept their unbeaten streak alive to begin the 2023 season, using two second half goals to beat the Knights (3-4-1, 0-2-1).
With a gray sky and clouds building, neither team would find a way to score in the opening half of action.
The halftime break brought with it a spattering of rain, and by midway through the second half, the skies had fully opened in a September downpour.
In the 69th minute, a foul in the top of the Warner Pacific box would provide
Emily Funseth (Great Falls, Mont. / SR) with a penalty shot and a chance to give Carroll the game's first goal. Funseth buried the ball in the top left corner of the net, and Carroll would take a 1-0 lead.
Field conditions worsened rapidly, and both teams struggled to find their footing.
With just two minutes remaining in the game, Carroll would find the insurance goal they were looking for.
Molly Molvig (Billings, Mont. / JR) would beat the Warner Pacific keeper to the right hand side of the net on a Carroll breakaway to put the game at rest, 2-0.
The Saints will look to keep the momentum next week, heading into a matchup with Bushnell (Ore.) on Friday afternoon in Eugene.
