SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Carroll College Volleyball team never quite got things going today at the San Antonio Shindig, dropping two games in straight sets to No. 10 SAGU (Texas) and No. 1 Jamestown (N.D.).
The Fighting Saints (3-3) were unable to upend either of the top-10 ranked teams that they faced today at the San Antonio Shindig. They fell in three sets to No.10 SAGU in the early afternoon, as well as a thee set loss to No. 1 Jamestown in the evening session.
CARROLL vs. No. 10Â SAGU
Things started out great for the Saints early in the first set. Carroll quickly scored the first three points of the match and looked like a well-oiled machine, but the Lions would awake from their slumber and take set one, 25-20.
SAGU cruised to a 25-15 second set victory, but the Saints would not go down without a fight.
The Lions would score the first five points in the final frame, but Carroll would work their way back into what would be a back-and-forth battle of a set. SAGU would find several leads throughout the frame, but each time Carroll would respond. The Saints would eventually find themselves with a 23-22 lead, but the Lions found a way to rattle off the game's final three points to secure the win.
Outside Hitter
Mara Lynch (Bozeman, Mont. / SR) paced the Saints with 10 kills in the match, and
Julia Carr (Portland, Ore. / SR) tied SAGU's Madison Petten for a game-high 22 digs.
Ella Tompkins of the Lions led all players with 11 kills in the game.
CARROLL vs. No. 1 JAMESTOWN
Carroll's day would not get any easier, as they faced off with the defending national champion and current NAIA No. 1 team, Jamestown in the second match of the day.
The Saints struggled to get points on the board in the first two sets, falling in each, 25-16. The second set was one to forget for the Carroll attackers, as the team hit just .036 in the frame.
Trailing by two sets, a young, but resilient Carroll squad gave the Jimmies all that they could handle in the third frame. Much like the afternoon match, Carroll would find themselves in an early hole. Jamestown jumped out to an early lead, but Carroll fought their way back into the mix, tying things up at 6-6, and eventually taking the frame's largest lead at 20-16. Carroll would be unable to close out the set however, with Jamestown going on to win in extra points, 27-25, to sweep the match.
No one on the Carroll roster was able to crack the double-digit kill mark in the second game, and production was down as a whole. Carr finished with 14 digs, while Lynch and
Lauren Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / FR) each posted a team-high seven kills.
Jamestown's Lily Bertsch finished with 20 assists, and a pair of Jimmies, Logan Sherman and Darienne Johnson, each had nine kills.
The Saints will have the opportunity to finish the event at .500 tomorrow when they take on tournament host, Our Lady of the Lake, and Oklahoma City to wrap up the weekend's play.
