Carroll Softball Swept at British Columbia

VANCOUVER, B.C. - The Carroll College Softball team came away winless in a three-game marathon day at the University of British Columbia on Friday.

The Fighting Saints (14-25, 10-16), fighting for a spot in the 2023 Cascade Collegiate Conference postseason, were unable to come out of a damp Friday in Canada with a win, losing three conference matchups with British Columbia (24-13, 17-9).

The first game of the day was a pitchers duel, with Carroll's Abby Hanley (Las Vegas, Nev. / SR) and UBC's Shae Sever duking it out in a low-scoring affair.

Hanley pitched a very good game, going the distance, giving up only six hits, and striking out nine batters in the process, but a third inning blast would prove to be unsurmountable for the Saints.

Keona Nordquist hit a two-run home run in the third inning to provide the game's only runs, and UBC would win 2-0.

Shae Sever struck out 16 Carroll batters, and allowed only four hits in the game.

Runs came in bunches in game number two of the day.

The Thunderbirds hopped out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring a pair of runs off of throwing errors to go up 2-0 after one. They would add one more run in the third on an RBI groundout, taking a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning.

Carroll finally broke their scoreless drought in the fourth, and did so in a big way. The Saints would score seven runs on six hits in the top half of the fourth.

Kaitlynn Ayers (Twin Falls, Idaho / JR) started the rally with an RBI double to center field, and Annie Davidson (Boise, Idaho / SR) would bring her in just two batters later on an RBI single. The Saints would score a run of their own on a wild pitch, evening things up at 3-3, before Kati Slater (Yamhill, Ore. / FR) would pick up an RBI on a fielder's choice to give Carroll their first lead of the day, 4-3. Jessica Nimmo (Las Vegas, Nev. / SR) capped the big fourth inning with a three-run home run to left field, putting Carroll on top 7-3.

Unfortunately for the Saints, UBC would respond in the bottom half of the fourth to regain the lead.

The Thunderbirds scored on back-to-back RBI doubles, and then were aided by a pair of untimely errors and a walked in run to go back on top. When the dust settled on the explosive inning, UBC was on top 9-7.

Each team would add another run in the fifth inning on errors by the other team, and UBC would go on to win 10-8.

The third game of the day would not favor the Saints.

The Thunderbirds jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with RBI's coming from a Hannah Hansen single, Shae Sever double, and Olivia Malesku sac fly.

UBC added a run in the fourth inning to go up 4-0, and then put the nail in the coffin with a three-run fifth inning to win 7-0.

Carroll's bats went ice cold in the final game. The team had just three hits in 24 at-bats, stranding five runners on base.

The two teams will play a fourth-and-final non-conference game tomorrow morning at 12 p.m. (MDT)
