Carroll Softball Caps Weekend Series With Win at UBC

VANCOUVER, B.C. - The Carroll College Softball team ended the weekend on a high note, beating the University of British Columbia 6-4 in a non-conference game to wrap up a weekend series in Canada.

The Fighting Saints (15-25, 10-16) came away victorious in the lone non-conference contest with UBC (24-14, 17-19) on Saturday afternoon.

The Thunderbirds got the early jump on the Saints, when in the first inning Olivia Malesku provided an RBI single to open the scoring. Gabrielle Dorval extended UBC's lead to three later in the opening frame with a 2 RBI double to give the Thunderbirds a 3-0 lead after the first frame.

In the top half of the third inning Kaitlynn Ayers (Twin Falls, Idaho / JR) tied the game with one swing of the bat. Ayers blasted a three-run homer to tie things up at 3-3, but the Saints weren't finished. Abbie Amend (Spokane, Wash. / FR), the game's winning pitcher, gave herself some run support with an RBI single to put Carroll on top 4-3.

Haley Kampka (Stevensville, Mont. / SR) gave the Saints some cushion in the fourth inning. The senior picked up 2 RBI's on a single, extending the Carroll lead to 6-3.

An RBI single from UBC's Keona Nordquist would bring the score to 6-4 in the seventh frame, but the Saints managed to end the rally there and close out the 6-4 win.

Abbie Amend earned the complete game win, while also going 1-3 at the plate with a go-ahead RBI. Ayers finished the game 2-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Alyssa Lybbert (Las Vegas, Nev. / SO) finished 2-3 with two runs scored.

Carroll will have a quick turnaround entering the final week of league play. The Saints will head to Great Falls for a doubleheader with Providence on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
