DILLON, Mont. - The No. 11 Carroll College Women's Basketball team completed a season sweep of the Frontier Conference's second-highest ranked team, No. 15 Montana Western, with a 69-61 win on Saturday.
The Fighting Saints (20-5,11-1) have created some separation at the top of the Frontier Conference standings, beating the conference's second place team, Montana Western (21-4, 9-3) for the third time this season.Â
Jamie Pickens (Helena, Mont. / SR) has been on a tear as of late, and the senior showed just how dominant she can be in the first quarter on Saturday. Pickens scored 11 of the Saints' 17 first quarter points and pulled down four rebounds as well. Carroll would take a 17-11 lead into the second quarter.
Again, Pickens proved her might. The Senior forward scored 10 more points in the second quarter, bringing her halftime total to 21 points; the same amount of points as the Bulldogs.
After controlling Western's Brynley Fitzgerald and limiting her to just five first half points, the Saints carried a 36-21 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs would try to make a move in the third quarter. Montana Western finally slowed down Pickens, holding her to just two points in the quarter, and would narrow the Carroll lead to single-digits on several occasions. The Bulldogs outscored the Saints in the third, with Carroll still holding a 46-37 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Sienna Swannack (Nine Mile Falls, Wash. / GR) scored nine of her 15 points in the fourth quarter, and the Saints were able to withstand any attempt at a late Bulldog comeback.Â
Pickens posted yet another double-double on her year. She finished with a game-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. Swannack was the only other Saint to finish with double-digit points, finishing with 15 and five rebounds.
Montana Western's Brynley Fitzgerald finished with a team-high 22 points, followed by Jordan Sweeney with 10.
Today's win marks the sixth-consecutive 20 win season for Rachelle Sayers and her Fighting Saints. The win also gives Carroll a two-game cushion over the second-place Bulldogs heading into the final stretch of the 2022-23 season.
Carroll will travel to Butte on Thursday for the third installment of their season series with Montana Tech.
