CALDWELL, Idaho - The Carroll College Softball team could not get the bats going today, dropping a pair of games to No. 13 College of Idaho in their Cascade Collegiate Conference season opening series.
The Fighting Saints (3-6, 0-2) were unable to generate much offense on day one of the CCC regular season, falling to No. 13 College of Idaho 11-0, 10-1 in a double header in in Caldwell this afternoon.
Carroll, playing outdoors for the first time on the young season, struggled to get hot at the plate in two games against the No. 13 Yotes on Friday.Â
The Saints, who were originally scheduled to host the series before a weather induced relocation, played as the home team even though the games took place in Idaho.
In the first game of the series, Carroll hung right in there with the Yotes through three innings. The College of Idaho led 3-0 after three innings, and would blow the game open in the top of the fourth. Madelyn Powell provided a three-run home run for the Yotes, putting them on top 7-0 after four. Haley Loffer would provide the dagger just one inning later, a two-run home run to put the Yotes up 11-0 in the fifth. Carroll would be unable to score in the bottom half of the inning, ending the game and giving the win to the College of Idaho.
The Saints went just 6-20 from the plate as a team, with no real scoring opportunities to speak of.
Much of the same would be in store for the second game of the doubleheader. The Yotes took an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. Carroll would respond in the second, however, a fielding error by the College of Idaho allowed
Jessica Nimmo (Las Vegas, Nev. / SR) to score and tie things up.
Again, Carroll would let the game get away from themselves in the fifth inning. The Yotes homered three times in the fifth, racing out to a six run advantage. Two more homers in the sixth inning would give the College of Idaho their second win of the day, 10-1.
Cold bats were again the story of the afternoon for the Saints, as they finished game two just 5-22 as a team.Â
Haley Loffer hit three homers on the afternoon, becoming the College of Idaho's all time program leader in home runs.
Carroll will look to regroup and even the series tomorrow, as they finish off the weekend with another double header at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
