HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Volleyball team dropped a four set match to Montana Western, 3-1 on Wednesday evening at the Carroll College PE Center.
The Fighting Saints (5-18, 0-7) found early success, but were unable to sustain it, eventually falling in four sets to the Bulldogs (18-3, 5-2) on a frigid night in Helena.
The game started as well as the Saints could have hoped for heading into the evening. Carroll rode a .211 hitting percentage and six kills from
Sidney Gulick (Kalispell, Mont. / SO) to jump out to a first set victory, 25-22.
Things would shift in a hurry, however, with Carroll hitting just . 086 in the second frame, while the Bulldogs found their stride (.267), and Western would race to a 25-15 second set victory to even the match at 1-1.
Trailing 21-18 late in the third set, the Saints would march back to tie things up a 23-23, but the Bulldogs would find a way to rattle off the final two points of the set and take a 2-1 advantage.
Western had their best hitting frame of the night in the fourth set, and wrapped up a 25-17 set win to take the match three sets to one.
Mara Lynch (Bozeman, Mont. / SR) had another outstanding night for the Saints, leading all players with 16 total kills and adding 15 digs as well.
Jansyn Carrizales (Sunnyside, Wash. / FR) led Carroll with 23 assists and a pair of aces.
Julia Carr (Portland, Ore. / SR) finished her night with 22 digs.
Western's Kaylee Fritz led all players with 32 assists, while Peyton Vogl had a game-high 6 blocks for the Bulldogs.
Next up for the Saints is a trip to Great Falls on Friday for a match with the Argonauts of Providence at the McLaughlin Center.
