HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Women's Soccer team got back to their winning ways on Friday, earning a 1-0 win over Oregon Tech at Nelson Stadium.
The Fighting Saints (9-1-2, 6-1-1) were able to respond after their first loss of the season last weekend, taking down the Owls (3-5-3, 2-4-2) in their penultimate home contest of 2023.
A physical first half was played mainly near the midfield, with neither team having much of an opportunity to break the scoreless tie. The officiating crew let the ladies bang around, with only one foul recorded in the opening frame.
Four minutes into the second half, an Oregon Tech foul in the box would provide
Emily Funseth (Great Falls, Mont. / SR) with a penalty kick and a chance to take the lead. Funseth, as has been the case every chance she's had this season, beat the Owls' keeper to the left side of the net to give the Saints the only goal they would need.
Carroll managed to fend off a barrage of attempts from the Owls over the final 15 minutes, and wrapped up their seventh shutout victory of the 2023 season, 1-0.
The heavy pressure at the end of the game would wind up tipping the overall shot total in favor of the Owls, 11-10, but
Maria Ackerman (Billings, Mont. / FR) was brilliant in net and finished with three crucial saves to finish with a clean sheet.
A senior day matchup with Southern Oregon tomorrow at 4 p.m. is in store for the Saints next, and they'll look to give Carroll supporters one final win on Nelson Stadium's natural grass field before artificial turf is installed in the spring.
