Carroll Volleyball Beats Western in Five Set Thriller

HELENA, Mont. – Carroll Volleyball kicked off their conference slate on Friday night with a 3-2 victory over Montana Western at the PE Center.
 
The Saints started the game out strong, taking the first set by a convincing score of 25-14.
 
In the second set, once again, it was all Carroll. A 25-17 win in the second set put Carroll up 2-0 in the match.
 
The Bulldogs, however, would not go quietly. Western edged out Carroll in the third set by a score of 25-23.
 
Things got interesting in the fourth set as the Saints and Bulldogs found themselves tied up at 25 a piece. Western scored the following two points and forced a fifth set.
 
Carroll found their groove once more in the fifth set, capping off a five-set victory 15-12.
 
Elizabeth Heuiser (Helena, Mont. /SO) led the Saints in kills and blocks with 20 and five respectively. Hannah Schweikert (Columbia Falls, Mont. / SO) posted a game-high 51 assists, and Julia Carr (Portland, Ore. / JR) was the team leader in digs with 33.
 
Peyton Vogl of Montana Western had a solid performance on the front line, tallying 13 kills and six blocks. Kaylee Fritz had 36 assists, and Kelsey Goddard had 24 digs.
 
Next up for the Saints, who are now 9-8 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, is a rivalry bout at Montana Tech next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
