Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Saints Women's Soccer Earns Shutout Victory

HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Women's Soccer team earned their first victory of the 2022 season on Sunday afternoon, beating the University of Lethbridge 3-0 at Nelson Stadium.

The Carroll Women's Soccer team entered their match this afternoon looking for increased pressure on the net, and were rewarded early on in today's game.

Only six minutes into the match, the Saints broke free in Lethbridge territory, leading to a foul in the box. Emily Funseth (Great Falls, Mont. / JR), coming off a penalty shot goal in yesterday's match, once again took the try for the Saints. In nearly a mirror image of yesterday, she was able to beat the keeper to the right side and give Carroll the early 1-0 advantage.

Now playing with the lead, Carroll kept up the offensive attack, putting up eight shots in the first 25 minutes of the match.

In the 41st minute, Forward Aryana Jones (Lathrop, Calif. / FR) hit a beautiful cross from the left side of the box, where Blair Stapleton (Billings, Mont. / SR) was ready and waiting. Stapleton was able to easily beat the keeper on a header for her first goal of the year.

The second half was far slower-paced than the first. Both teams struggled to generate much in the way of opportunities, and the majority of play took place near midfield. That would change in the 78th minute, when Melissa Dugger (Billings, Mont. / SR) put a cross into the box, where once again, Stapleton was set up. Stapleton put the ball into the back of the net to bring her total to two on both the game and season.

The Saints move to 1-0-1 on the year, and turn their focus to a non-conference match on Thursday evening against Providence. That game will be played at Nelson Stadium in Helena, and will be streamed on the Fighting Saints Network.
