Carroll Women's Soccer Earn Second Straight Shutout, Beat Providence 5-0

HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Women's Soccer Team earned their second consecutive shutout victory with a 5-0 victory over Providence Thursday night at Nelson Stadium.

Tonight's game carried a little extra weight for the Saints, as they played in honor and remembrance of Addalyn Selvig, an area youth who tragically passed away this summer.

Saints Assistant Coach Meghan O'Connell organized members of the Selvig family, as well as teammates from Addalyn's HYSA youth soccer team to join the Saints on the field for pregame introductions. At kick-off, players on both sides, along with a large crowd, observed a 10-second moment of silence with a running clock and no action. After the moment of silence, the crowd went wild, and those gathered for Addalyn released balloons into the sky; an ode to their departed loved one.

Once the game started, things were slow moving to start the first half. Neither team was able to make much of an advance, and for the majority of the first half, play occurred near the midfield.

In the 41st minute, the scoring was opened. Forward Blair Stapleton (Billings, Mont. / SR), fresh off of a two goal performance on Sunday, beat the Argo keeper to put the Saints on top 1-0 heading into the half.

The second half would play out much differently than the first. Only three minutes into half number two, Stapleton scored goal number two, bringing her season tally up to four.

Aryana Jones (Lathrop, Calif. / FR), who has made the most of her opportunities early in the season, scored in the 65th minute to put the Saints up 3-0.

Emily Funseth (Great Falls, Mont. / JR) tacked on another goal in the 75th minute, and Jones put an exclamation point on the match with an 89th minute goal to end the game at 5-0.

Fittingly enough, Addalyn Selvig wore #5 when she played, a sign that would not go unnoticed by those in attendance.

Carroll will turn their attention towards preparation for several games in the Midwest next week. The Saints will play Dort and Northwestern College on Friday and Saturday in Iowa.
