HELENA, Mont. – The Carroll Softball team dropped two games on Saturday afternoon on the second day of their Cascade Conference series against the University of British Columbia. UBC won the first game 8-0 in five innings and the second game 6-2.
On a breezy day in Helena, the wind was loud and the bats were quiet to open the first game. The score was tied 0-0 after the first three innings.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Thunderbirds blew the game open and tied together a string of hits that totaled up to six runs.
UBC picked up where they left off in the fifth inning and added two runs. The Saints were unable to get on the board in the bottom half, and the game ended on the mercy rule.
The second game started with a bang as Hanna Hansen hit a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to put the Thunderbirds on top.
Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning,
Haley Kampka drove in
Emma Hamilton with a double to left to put the Saints on the board.
UBC responded in the sixth inning with two more runs off of two RBI doubles and Carroll trailed 6-1.
The Saints got runners on base in the seventh inning and
Sydnee Paul scored one on an RBI-single, but that would be all as they fell short 6-2.
Carroll is back on the road next weekend as they head down to Ashland, Ore., for a four-game stint against Southern Oregon on Thursday and Friday.
