BILLINGS, Mont. – The 11
th-ranked Carroll Women's Basketball team fell short in the Frontier Conference Championship game on Tuesday night as the No. 10 Battlin' Bears of Rocky Mountain College edged out a 59-56 win.
Rocky came out firing as a couple of corner threes put them ahead 12-6 in the first quarter.
Maddie Geritz came off the bench and gave the Saints an immediate lift, scoring five quick points to cut the deficit. Rocky led 15-14 headed into the second.
Carroll's bench continued to shine throughout the second quarter.
Jaidyn Lyman came in and changed the tone on the defensive end and
Genesis Wilkinson shined bright, scoring all eight of her points in the second. Carroll led 32-27 at half.
The Bears surged in the third quarter, outscoring the Saints 16-6 to take a 43-38 lead into the final period.
Carroll took the lead back in the fourth quarter on a
Jaidyn Lyman steal and bucket. Rocky took the lead back but a
Sienna Swannack offensive rebound kept a Saints possession alive and
Danielle Wagner hit a three to put them up by two.
On the ensuing possession, Mackenzie Dethman knocked down a three-pointer to put Rocky back up by one point.
Christine Denny responded with a layup to put Carroll up by one.
N'Dea Flye went to the free throw line and made both to put the Battlin' Bears ahead. The Saints were unable to strike back and Rocky went on to win by a final score of 59-56.
Christine Denny led Carroll with 17 points and seven rebounds as the only Carroll player in double figures.
Jaidyn Lyman finished with four steals.
N'Dea Flye scored a game-high 24 points to lead Rocky.
Carroll will now wait to hear their name called on Thursday in the NAIA National Tournament Selection Show. The show will begin at 5 p.m. MST and will air on the NAIA Facebook page.
