HELENA, Mont. - The No. 11 Carroll College Women's Basketball team picked up right where they left off before the Christmas break, beating Lakeland College (CA) 94-59 Thursday afternoon at the Carroll College PE Center.
The Fighting Saints (10-4, 2-0) did not show any signs of rust, coming off of a quick Christmas break with their families. Carroll breezed past their first Canadian opponent of the year, Lakeland College, 94-59.
One storyline heading into the game was
Kamden Hilborn's (Clancy, Mont. / GR) pursuit of the program's all-time assist record. Hilborn needed two assists to surpass the mark set by Trish Rennaker (408), and she wasted little time in doing so this afternoon.
Hilborn set up a wide-open look from three for
Sienna Swannack (Nine Mile Falls, Wash. / GR) to give the Saints a six point advantage midway through the first half, and cement herself as Carroll's all-time assists leader.
The first quarter as a whole featured explosive offense from both teams, but Carroll would take a 29-18 lead into the second.
A layup from
Jamie Pickens (Helena, Mont. / SR) with two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first half would give the Saints their largest lead to that point at 15. The Rustlers would narrow the gap to 12 points heading into the break, with Carroll on top 49-37.
Carroll came out of the half on a hot streak, quickly extending their lead to 24 points within the first few minutes of the third quarter. The Saints seemingly could do no wrong and finished with 30 points in the third, giving their younger players a chance to get some game experience in the fourth quarter en route to the 94-59 win.
Jame Pickens led all scorers on the day, finishing with 24 points on 10-15 from the field.
Kyndall Keller (Havre, Mont. / JR) had another solid outing, adding 12 points of her own.
Hilborn nearly posted her second triple-double in as many weeks, finishing with 11 assists, eight rebounds, and eight points.
Lakeland's Alana Olson led the Rustlers with 15 points, while Susan Ayaa scored 11 off of the bench.
Carroll will turn their attention towards a New Year's Eve matchup with another Canadian school, Briercrest, at 2 p.m. in Helena.
