Carroll Softball splits double-header at Providence

GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- The Carroll Softball team traveled to Great Falls on Thursday to kick-off the closing weekend of their conference schedule in a series with Providence. They opened that series with a split, taking the first game by a final score of 11-2 and falling 7-6 in nine innings in the second game.

The first game of the day started out close, in a 1-1 tie game, after the first inning of play. In the top half of the third inning, Carroll took a 2-1 lead after back-to-back doubles from Jessica Nimmo and Amber Brewer. Another Amber Brewer RBI double, this time plating two runs, extended the Saints lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth. Brewer went on to score by way of an error and just like that, Carroll was in the lead 5-1. Providence started at a comeback attempt with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Saints went on to pull away with a six-run seventh inning and won the game 11-2.

In the second game, the Saints got on the board first once again. Jessica Nimmo reached base on a double, before scoring on an Argo error to put Carroll up 1-0. Carroll extended their lead in the fourth inning when Whitney Durocher stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run homer to make it a 3-0 ball game. In the top of the sixth inning it was another two run shot, this time off the bat of Emma Hamilton, that put the Saints up 5-1. Providence would not go quietly though, as they tallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game up at five a piece and force extras. Amber Brewer broke the tie with an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to give the Saints a 6-5 lead, but the Argos fought back one more time and scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk the game off. 

Carroll now has a total record of 14-30 on the season and a conference record of 8-18. 
 
Providence is now 5-28 overall and 5-21 in the Cascade.

The Saints and the Argos will meet again on Friday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
