HELENA, Mont. -- The Carroll College Fighting Saints Football team got back in the win column on Saturday afternoon at Nelson Stadium, defeating Montana State-Northern 49-7.
The Saints' offense got rolling early in the ballgame and they never took their foot off the gas.Â
After kicking the ball off to start the game, Carroll turned the Lights over on downs and followed it up with a nine play, 65 yard drive to get on the board first. Matthew Burgess, a sophomore running back from Junction City, Ore., scored the first touchdown from nine yards out.Â
On their second possession, the Saints marched again. A 14 play, 68 yard touchdown drive, ending on a Devan Bridgewater QB sneak, put them up 14-0 with 12:32 remaining in the first half.
Bridgewater, a sophomore quarterback from Eagle, Idaho, finished the game 11 for 18 on pass attempts with two total touchdowns.Â
After another Burgess touchdown, a TJ Abraham interception gave the ball back to the Saints on their own 12 yard line. Devan Bridgewater connected with Camron Rothie, a redshirt freshman wide receiver from Hamilton, Mont., for a five yard touchdown to cap off an 88 yard drive to end the half.
Carroll led 28-0 at half time.
In the second half, Saints fans got to see some promising action from some of their young guys. True freshmen Carson Ochoa and Brennen Crawford both scored touchdowns for the Saints during the second half. The scoring for the Saints was capped off with a 65 yard touchdown run by redshirt freshman Duncan Kraft.
The lone touchdown for the Lights came in the fourth quarter when Brenden Medina hit Jake Horner on a fade route from six yards out.Â
It was just another day at the office for Matthew Burgess, who rushed 25 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
With this victory, Carroll is now 2-1 on the season. Northern now has a record of 0-2.
The Saints will have a bye next weekend before they take on College of Idaho at Nelson Stadium on April 10th to end the regular season.
