DILLON, Mont. -- The Carroll Women's Basketball team finished their conference season on a high note Sunday, defeating Montana Western 70-59 in Dillon.
Throughout the first half, the defensive pressure from Western gave Carroll fits. The Bulldogs were leading 30-29 as the half was winding down. Then the Saints closed out the second quarter on a 8-0 run, capped off by a steal and bucket by Kamden Hilborn, a junior from Helena, as time expired. Carroll took a 37-30 lead into the break.
In the second half, the depth of the Saints proved to be too powerful for the Bulldogs. Carroll took a double-digit lead early on in the third quarter, and held it for the majority of the second half.
Western cut the deficit down to eight points in the fourth, but a couple of clutch buckets from Carroll put the game out of reach. The Saints ended up winning by a final score of 70-59.
Danielle Wagner, a senior from Havre, Mont., scored a game high 25 points to help lead the Saints to the win. Wagner also finished with nine rebounds.
For Western it was their lone senior Paige Holmes, from Seeley Lake, Mont., who scored 16 points to lead the Bulldogs.
With the win, Carroll will finish their regular season with a record of 19-2. Western, on the other hand, closes at 14-8.
The Saints will have a bye for the opening round of the Frontier Conference Playoffs. They will open postseason play next Saturday at the PE Center at 5 p.m.
