CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Carroll Men's Basketball team got back in the win column on Sunday evening with a 62-61 win over the Pioneers of Antelope Valley.
In the first half, the Saints led by as many as 11 points when they went up 25-14. The Pioneers continued to battle as they narrowed the deficit back down to 32-27 at the half time break.
Things stayed tight all through the second half as both teams exchanged buckets. With just under five minutes left in the game, Antelope Valley took the lead for the first time since the beginning of the game.
Carroll responded with two huge three-pointers from senior point guard
Shamrock Campbell. The Saints led 59-55 with 2:44 remaining.
UAV battled back near the end and took a 61-60 lead on a tip-in from Arik Nicholas with 36 seconds left. Carroll went down on the ensuing position and
Jovan Sljivancanin went to the free throw line after being fouled on a put-back attempt. He went on to hit both free throws, giving the Saints a 62-61 lead.
The Pioneers missed two shot attempts in the last few seconds and Carroll walked away with their 13
th win of the season.
Ifeanyi Okeke paced the Saints in scoring. The junior had a huge day with 15 points and eight rebounds of 7 of 13 shooting.
Shamrock Campbell and
Jovan Sljivancanin each had 13 points.
Antelope Valley was led by a game-high 20 points from Elias Ezenekwe.
The Saints are now 13-1 on the year. They will play their final game of the Cactus Classic on Monday at 2 p.m. against Embry Riddle.
