CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Carroll Men's Basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on day one of the Cactus Classic on Friday afternoon, falling 69-67 to No. 10 Arizona Christian.
Carroll started the game out hot and jumped out to a 10-0 lead three minutes into the first half. The Firestorm immediately responded with a timeout and a 9-0 run of their own. From there, it was an absolute battle the rest of the way.
After a strong shooting performance from beyond the arc in the first half by Carroll, the score was tied 34-34 at the break.
Neither team wavered in the second half as the back-and-forth affair continued.
With under a minute left, the Saints found themselves down by two points.
Ifeanyi Okeke made a turnaround bucket to tie it up at 67-67 with 21 seconds left. The Firestorm played for the final shot as Angelo Johnson drove the lane and buried a reverse layup as time expired to win the game 69-67.
Carroll was led by
Shamrock Campbell, who finished with a game-high 17 points on 7 of 13 shooting.
Jonny Hillman was right behind him, scoring 12 points on 4 of 8 shooting.
The leading scorer for Arizona Christian was Angelo Johnson. He finished the game with 13 points on 6 of 8 shooting, highlighted by the game-winning shot.
Following the loss, the Saints are now 12-1 on the season. On Sunday, they will look to bounce back against Antelope Valley at 4 p.m. for their second game of the Cactus Classic. Antelope Valley defeated Providence 86-83 on Friday afternoon.
