Carroll Football clinches third straight winning season, takes down Yotes

HELENA, Mont. – The Carroll Football team clinched their third consecutive winning season on Saturday afternoon with a 21-6 home win over College of Idaho.

It was a defensive showcase throughout the better part of the first quarter as the Yotes forced a Saints fumble and Colin Sassano intercepted a pass from Ryan Hibbs. It looked like C of I was going to strike first, but Caden Cobb fumbled the ball out of the back of the endzone, leading to a touchback that gave Carroll the ball back.

Two plays later, Baxter Tuggle escaped the Yote defense for an 80-yard touchdown run to put the Saints up 7-0 with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter.

College of Idaho quickly responded with a 15 play, 60-yard drive that was capped off by a Nick Calzaretta one-yard touchdown run. The Yotes failed to convert the point after making it a 7-6 Carroll lead with 11:08 to go in the first half.

Later on in the second quarter, Rex Irby recovered a fumble to set the Saints up with good field position at the C of I 34 yard-line. The next play, Jack Prka flicked a 34-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Kyle Pierce to put Carroll up 14-6 with 8:30 left in the half.

The Saints closed out the first half with a 10-play, 86-yard drive ending in a Baxter Tuggle four-yard touchdown and took a 21-6 lead into the break.

The score would not change the rest of the game, as the Carroll defense put on a clinic in the second half headlined by two interceptions at the hands of Micah Ans and Dawson Zebarth.

Carroll's offense was carried by their rushing attack today. Duncan Kraft (114 rushing yards) and Baxter Tuggle (123 rushing yards) combined for 237 yards on the ground.

The C of I offensive attack was led by wide receiver Jake Nadley, who had 10 catches for 103 yards.

Following Saturday's victory, Carroll finishes the season with a record of 6-4 and in fourth place of the Frontier Conference.
