HELENA, Mont. -- The Carroll College Fighting Saints softball team opened up the Cascade Collegiate Conference season with an upset of No. 19 College of Idaho on Friday, winning 13-4 in Caldwell, Idaho.
COI surged out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning after a Haley Loffer homer and a Trystin Crofts triple, but the Saints crept back in.
An
Anna Davidson single scored
Michaela Fetzer in the fourth and then
Kendall Mooney stole home to get the Saints on the board, trailing 3-2 after four.
Carroll grabbed the lead in the fifth inning when Ali Williams cranked a two-shot homer.
COI responded with a Hattie Hruza homer in the bottom of the fifth, and then the Saints exploded.
Carroll uncorked six runs in the sixth inning, scoring on a trio of errors before
Megan McCormick slapped a RBI single.
The Saints padded their lead in the seventh as
Amber Brewer hit a two RBI double and then
Natalie Gaber brought another in on a sacrifice fly.
Brooke Yarnall racked up three hits on the day, going 3-for-5 in the box.
Ali Williams (2-1) got the win on the mound, throwing the complete game while allowing six hits and four earned runs to go along with her five strikeouts.
The Saints and Yotes were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday, but a water issue made COI's field unplayable. The teams played only one contest and Friday's game was moved to Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon.
Carroll and COI will play a doubleheader on Saturday with both games counting as conference games back in Ontario, Oregon.
