HELENA, Mont. -- The No. 6-ranked Carroll College Fighting Saints staked their claim in the paint and struck it rich, as they took down the Montana Tech Orediggers 75-60 on Thursday in Butte.
The Saints (8-1) outscored the Orediggers (1-3) 40-24 in the paint.
Carroll received a game-high 19 points from
Jamie Pickens. Joining her in double figures were
Danielle Wagner with 16, and
Christine Denny and
Sienna Swannack with 13 points each. Denny finished with a double-double, adding 10 rebounds.
The Saints took a 34-26 lead into halftime, and then built upon it in the third quarter. The Orediggers started the second half with four points, but then the Saints used a 16-6 run to build a nice cushion.
Carroll's lead would never fall into single digits again after that point.
The Orediggers were led by Brooke Heggie's 12 points.
The victory improved the Saints' record to 2-0 against the Orediggers this season. The Saints will be back in Frontier Conference action next week when they face the Montana State-Northern Skylights on January 4 and 5.
