HELENA, Mont. -- The Fighting Saints were able to track down the first win of their Washington road trip and first win of the season on Friday, beating Whitworth University with a score of 2-1 in Spokane, Washington.
The Saints came out ready to play with Jeronimo Huerta scoring the first goal in under two and a half minutes into the game. The goal came off an assist from junior midfielder
Nick Lowrimore.
Carroll kept the pressure on the whole first half with six more shot attempts as well as another goal.
In the 36th minute, freshman
Rory Bloy fired another rocket off of the crossbar to get the Saints the 2-0 lead.
Fans were expecting big things from the freshman after his monstrous goal in the Saints game against MSUB and he did not disappoint.
Whitworth did what they could to hold off the Saints in the first half but were only able to have two shots on goal during the entire period. The Fighting Saints were feeling confident going into halftime with a 2-0 lead but were ready for the Pirates to come out firing.
Just five minutes into the second half Whitworth's Jamie Rodriguez was able to sneak one in to make the score 2-1 and give the Pirates some life after struggling in the first half. Carroll had another six shots in the second half and did a good job staying on the attack and not letting up the pressure.
Carroll College goalie
Kaden Connor held off any more goals from Whitworth with six saves in the game.
With this win the Fighting Saints improved to 1-1-1 on the season and start preparing for a quick turnaround against Whitman College tomorrow in Spokane. This Carroll win also gave Whitworth their first loss of the season and put their record at 2-1-0 for the season.
