HELENA, Mont. -- Carroll College senior golfer
Joseph Potkonjak was named to the all-tournament team after a fourth-place finish to lead the Fighting Saints on the final day of the Carroll College Invite on Tuesday at Green Meadow Country Club.
Potkonjak fired a final round of 75 to close out the tournament with a five-over-par, 218. He finished just six shots off tournament winner Daniel Sigurjonsson of Rocky Mountain College, who shot a three-round total of 212.
"Joseph had a terrific tournament, made the all-tournament team and achieved a top-five finish," Saints coach
Bennett MacIntyre said. "Our men's team couldn't quite grind it out today after finding some success yesterday. We will prepare this week to head to Idaho and finish off the fall conference regular season."
The Saints as a team shot a 930 over three rounds to finish in fourth, 78-over-par.
Josh Neth and
Samuel Berry both tied for 18th, firing 234 over their three rounds.
Connor Mora finished with a three-round total of 244, to finish 26th.
Palmer Moylan fired a three-round total of 289 to close out Carroll's men scoring.
Rocky Mountain claimed the men's team title, recording a three-round score of 868, 16-over-par.
On the women's side, Carroll also finished in fourth place, shooting a two-round score of 682.
"Really proud of our girls today. Almost opposite of the men's team," MacIntyre said. "Really struggled yesterday and then got in a good groove today. Took 34 strokes off our team score from yesterday and were led by sophomore
Caroline Hobson. It was one of the top rounds of the day and the best of her career. She was able to do it in front of her parents who came out from Oregon."
Hobson led the way, firing a 167 over two days, showing a 15-stroke improvement in her second round to fire 76.
"It was an amazing day," Hobson said. "I've never had that much fun in a tournament round before. My group had a blast and all four of us played well so it was just a very positive environment."
Hobson led the way as every Saints women's player improved their or matched their scores on Day Two.
Weslee Nehl shot a two-round total of 17, while
Cailin Spencer fired two rounds of 86.
Katie Fagg went 93, 81 for a 174 and
Sydnee Nowlen shot a 185.
"Katie and Sydnee had really nice comeback rounds today and that really helped the team out," MacIntyre said. "When we play well as a collective group, we are quite capable of putting some really good scores together.
Madison Fernandez fired a 221 over her two rounds.
Next week, the Saints head to Lewiston, Idaho, for their final meet of the fall, the Warrior Invitational.
