HELENA, Mont. -- The Carroll College volleyball team takes to the road again for a weekend tournament against top NAIA competition.
The Fighting Saints (1-3) are in Bellevue, Nebraska, to compete in the Premier Labor Day Classic. The Saints will face No. 11 Dordt, No. 17 Central Methodist, Baker and No. 22 Bellevue on Friday and Saturday.
"I'm excited about the schedule we have and the possibilities," Saints coach Moe Boyle said. "At this point, we have to keep looking for the breakthrough and trying to find our way on the court so that we do have that breakthrough."Â
The Saints pushed No. 12 College of Idaho to five sets last weekend in Butte, Montana, before falling in the final game 15-12.Â
"Five five-set matches really takes its toll," Boyle said. "As much as it is a lot of reps, you have to feel the success of that. We'd like to start feeling the success. We need some wins."Â
This weekend, the Saints will look for those wins against more Top 25 teams.Â
The Saints face Dordt (3-1) and Central Methodist (6-1) on Friday at 1 and 7 p.m., respectively. Then on Saturday, it's on to Baker (3-5) before the finale against Bellevue (5-2).Â
Carroll packs some national acclaim with it as it enters Nebraska.Â
Through four games this season, senior
Hannah Dean leads the team in kill average per set, 2.3, and blocks per set, 1.6. Her block average is currently No. 3 in the NAIA.Â
The Saints as a team rank No. 7 in the NAIA in blocks per game with 2.8.Â
Freshman
Sophia Spoja leads the team in aces at seven, while redshirt sophomore Ali Williams is the assist leader with eight per set. Senior
Ayla Carpenter leads the team in digs at 4.1 per set.Â
The Saints could continue to turn heads statistically as they learn how to play together.Â
"It's getting to know each other on the court," Boyle said. "We have a lot of new people playing. It isn't just freshmen. Taelyr (Krantz) is getting used to being back on the court. Hannah is getting used to it. Everybody is getting used to them. They're two people we're counting on. As well as some of our other returners. We have a lot of new people on the court. We have to get more comfortable together."Â
