HELENA, Mont. -- The Carroll College Fighting Saints softball team's seniors' last game at Centennial Park will also be their first this season.
Carroll (14-21, 7-14 Cascade Collegiate Conference) hosts the University of British Columbia (12-19, 8-13) on Friday and Saturday, which will double as Senior Day.
"It's going to be a big weekend," Saints coach
Aaron Jackson said. "We finally get to play at our home field and we will celebrate our five seniors."
Weather has prevented the Saints from getting onto their home field in the lead up to this weekend. Finally, the Saints will get back onto familiar terrain while having an important weekend of conference play and the added celebration of Senior Day
The Saints currently sit in the sixth and final spot to advance to the CCC postseason with this weekend's games against UBC and a road trip to Providence still left on the slate.
"This weekend is simple: we need to continue to pitch well, play great defense and get quality at bats," Jackson said. "We set out to win another Cascade Conference series as we look to secure our bid to the postseason. It's come down to a two-week season. Win both series and we will be back to 0-0. We feel that once we get back to 0-0 we have a great shot to make a run."
A junior from Beaverton, Oregon,
Anna ApRoberts leads the Saints in the box. She's hitting a team-high .352 with a team-high 19 RBI.
Tess Eaton's 3.46 ERA leads the Saints' pitchers. She's recorded 70 strikeouts, a 5.38 average per outing.
The Saints will be looking to break a five-game slide.
The Thunderbirds also enter the matchup looking to end a skid. UBC will come to Helena riding a seven-game losing streak.
UBC is led at the plate by Cassa Courtney, who is hitting .378 this season. Her 28 RBI also lead the Thunderbirds.
The Saints will honor seniors
Brittany Smith of Helena, Montana,
TJ Rucker of Portland, Oregon,
Ashley Davis of Billings, Montana,
Tianna Sell of Mead, Colorado, and
Tess Eaton of San Diego, California. Seniors will be honored at the intermission of the third and fourth games on Saturday.
Friday's games are scheduled to begin at 2 and 4 p.m.
